Ohh hiking and backpacking <3 There is something so resetting about heading out into the woods, mountains, or any type of nature and spending some time decompressing via hiking. I tend to lean towards longer day hikes because a lot of hikes here prohibit dogs and boarding them every time I want to hike doesn’t seem fair! Whether it’s 4 miles or 6, I like to find a spot to set up a hammock, cook lunch/dinner, chill, and then hike down. I can’t believe it took me two years of hiking Utah Mountains to realize that I need to SLOW DOWN! Hiking is not a race. Take the time to relax and enjoy.
I was always so consumed with getting to the summit and then hurrying down to the car so my legs could stop screaming. FINALLY, this year I started going on longer hikes and taking them at a mild pace. I still probably push myself a little too hard but I allow myself to find some trees, hang the hammock, maybe take a nap, and kick off my boots. Taking this slow and steady approach has allowed me to find greater enjoyment in hikes than ever before.
Fueling yourself right during a hike is SO important!! I mean, think about what your asking your body to do for you! Respect it, listen to it, and feed it right! This BBQ TVP is a super easy camp meal that I’ve been making for quite some time now, even before I went vegan. TVP (textured vegetable protein) is super light and has 80 calories, 12g of Protein, and 7g carbs per 1/4 cup (dry). All of these things make it perfect for lightweight camp food!! Not to mention TVP is a snap to cook and its ready in ~10 minutes, which is perfect for the ravenous hiker!
This BBQ TVP is made up of a sauce mix and TVP. If you are a car camper or a day hiker, make the BBQ sauce up and put it into a mason jar or any other container and bring it along. If you are going for ultralight make the BBQ sauce and transfer it into a plastic bottle. The flavor will be so rewarding after a long day on the trail.
I didn’t want to necessarily say that this BBQ TVP was a BBQ Sandwich, because you can have it over just about anything or all by itself depending on your backpacking style. You can eat it straight out of the pot, mix it into a bag of chips or crackers (walking taco style), wrap it in a tortilla, or serve it on a bun (if you don’t mind smushed backpacking buns).
